Let Go of Your Plan

2013-07-30

A large source of anger can come from plans and when they go wrong. You probably find yourself getting upset if you are interrupted at work or home, wishing you could get time to focus on one thing without being pulled away. The thing that frustrates you is not really the cause of interruption (e.g. a person or phone call), it's the fact that you are forced to change what you are doing. A change of your plan, without warning, can be really annoying. But there is a secret weapon that will keep you from getting angry: letting go of your plan.

Even though there's a lot of proof that multitasking is not a human's strong suit, being overly stressed and frustrated throughout the day is much worse. And the problem here is that avoiding interruptions is often impossible.

When you learn to let go of your plan, you will have nothing to be angry about when you are interrupted. Simply let that task go and remember where to pick it back up. Then you can embrace the new task that has come to you with much less stress.

It's dead simple to try this new method of working. Next time you are interrupted and you start to feel annoyed, just stop and think about what is bothering you. It will likely be that you cannot continue your previous plan. Try letting your plan go and see how much happier you become.
